On this Heritage Day, we honour the rich tapestry of cultures, traditions, and histories that
make up our shared humanity as Africans. Our heritage is rooted in Ubuntu – the belief in
our shared dignity and interconnectedness – not in division, exclusion, or hatred.

Institutionalised xenophobia and vigilantism are not part of our culture or our heritage. They
erode the values of solidarity, compassion, and justice and inclusivity that generations before
us fought for. As Africans on the African continent, our destiny is intertwined. We thrive not
by turning against one another but by standing together, protecting one another, and affirming
the dignity of every person who calls this continent home.
Let us recommit ourselves today to building communities where everyone is safe, welcome,
and respected – because our true heritage is humanity, not hostility.
