Kopanang Africa Against Xenophobia (KAAX) Calls for Unity and End to Blame Game Following Gas Explosion in Johannesburg CBD

July 22, 2023

[Johannesburg, 22 July 2023] – Kopanang Africa Against Xenophobia (KAAX), a prominent organisation combating xenophobia, and dedicated to campaigning for the promotion of inclusivity by building solidarity in South Africa, expresses its heartfelt condolences to the family of the person who lost their life in the tragic explosion that occurred in the Johannesburg Central Business District (CBD). KAAX also stands in solidarity with those who were injured and extends our heartfelt support and empathy on their road to recovery. We support the call of the African Diaspora Forum (ADF) and other concerned groups to practice tolerance. KAAX similarly denounces the scapegoating of foreign nationals and illegal mining for this unfortunate incident.

KAAX Coordinating Committee member Julekha Latib visited the scene after the blast to assess the impact on the community. “Concerning the aftermath of the explosion, we have witnessed traders and residents facing significant challenges,” said Latib. “The streets, usually bustling with activity, now stand eerily quiet, and ATMs are not operational, resulting in a lack of accessible cash for those in need. Many traders are unsure of what their future holds and are coping with the absence of electricity, which they anticipate will take up to three months to be fully restored.”

Latib further emphasised the importance of recognising the complexity of the situation and avoiding hasty assumptions about the cause of the explosion. “As KAAX, we note that the City of Johannesburg has indicated that the damage was most probably caused by a gas explosion and not by illegal mining. We call upon all parties, experts and the media to await the outcome of the full and ongoing investigation into the cause of the blast rather than expressing alarmist opinions,” urged Latib. “Blaming migrants and vulnerable communities without concrete evidence is detrimental and perpetuates division within our society.”

In light of the situation, KAAX urges the relevant authorities to take immediate action to address critical issues faced by affected individuals. We note with concern the immediate removal of homeless from the area and hope that this is not authorities using the situation as an excuse to displace already vulnerable people. We call for the deployment of human rights monitors to ensure the fair treatment and safety of those living in the affected buildings, or on the streets as well as temporary alternative accommodation for those who are prohibited from going to their homes, and access to essential services, including counseling, should be provided for those dealing with trauma and loss. We note the disproportionate impact of the explosion on the working class and the most impoverished in society including people who live on the affected streets. This is an opportunity for all who live in South Africa to show empathy and support for the thousands of people who work in the informal economy who will be severely affected by this tragic event.

Furthermore, KAAX highlights the importance of proper management and cautionary measures at the site, considering the open holes and exposed piping, which pose potential risks to the safety of individuals in the vicinity.

KAAX acknowledges the efforts of the South African authorities and emergency response teams in their response to the incident. We urge all stakeholders, including media, political parties, and community leaders, to exercise responsibility in their communications and to work together to support the affected communities during this difficult time.
