JUSTICE NOW FOR SIMUNYE WORKERS

June 26, 2023

Kopanang Africa Against Xenophobia (KAAX) stands in solidarity with the Simunye Workers Forum (SWF) and the Casual Workers Advice Office (CWAO) in the wake of the shocking and deplorable act of violence that occurred in Germiston on 24th June 2023. We condemn the shooting of SWF activists, CWAO board members, and innocent bystanders in the strongest possible terms.

It is deeply distressing to hear that individuals advocating for the rights and fair treatment of workers were met with such brutality and disregard for human life. We express our heartfelt sympathy and support to those who were injured and their families, and we hope for their swift recovery.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by workers in precarious employment and the lengths to which some employers will go to suppress their legitimate demands. KAAX believes in the inherent dignity and worth of all individuals, regardless of their nationality or employment status. We denounce any form of discrimination, exploitation, or violence targeting workers and their advocates.

The use of armed gunmen to intimidate and harm peaceful marchers is an affront to the principles of justice, equality, and freedom of assembly. We call on the South African authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into this incident and ensure that those responsible are held accountable for their actions. It is crucial that the footage from the surrounding cameras be retrieved to shed light on the events and bring about justice.

KAAX recognizes the broader context of the labour broking industry and the challenges faced by workers organizing for their rights. The intimidation, threats, and violence experienced by SWF and CWAO activists are deeply concerning and unacceptable. We stand with these organizations in their pursuit of justice, fair working conditions, and the recognition of their right to organize as a trade union.

In this difficult time, KAAX extends its support to the staff of CWAO and the activists from SWF who have been traumatized by this horrific incident. We commend their courage in standing up for workers’ rights and vow to continue supporting their efforts to create a just and inclusive society for all.

We urge civil society organizations, human rights advocates, and individuals committed to social justice to stand together against xenophobia, discrimination, and violence. Only through collective action and solidarity can we create a world where every individual’s rights and dignity are respected, regardless of their background or employment status.
