Press Alert: Hearing on Dr. Phophi Ramathuba Today

March 25, 2024

Date: 25 March 2024

Time: 10:00 AM

Location: Sheraton Hotel, Pretoria

Kopanang Africa Against Xenophobia (KAAX) urgently informs the public and media of today’s hearing into the conduct of Dr. Phophi Constance Ramathuba, MEC for Health in Limpopo Province, scheduled for 10:00 AM at the Sheraton Hotel, Pretoria.

Nigel Branken from KAAX will be testifying following a complaint lodged on behalf of several supporting organizations, including Lawyers for Human Rights, Neighbours NPO, Treatment Action Campaign, Section 27, Socio-Economic Rights Institute, Health Justice Initiative, Progressive Health Forum, and the Helen Suzman Foundation.

The complaint centers around a widely circulated video from August 2022, in which Dr. Ramathuba made xenophobic remarks to a patient at a hospital in Bela Bela. These remarks, violating the Health Professions Council of South Africa’s ethics, challenge our collective commitment to dignity, equality, and justice in healthcare. They misdirect blame for healthcare deficiencies onto foreign nationals, obscuring true issues such as mismanagement, official misconduct, and corruption.

KAAX urges the government and the public to focus on the root causes of poor service delivery in Limpopo province and across South Africa.

The public and press are invited to attend and cover this critical event, highlighting the importance of ethical conduct in healthcare and the fight against xenophobia.
